Abstract

Abstract: Drawing on a study of Angolan postcolonial literature, this paper—grounded in the close relationship between fiction and reality—sets out to analyse how Ondjaki’s short story “A piscina do tio Victor” (2007) reinterprets his childhood in Luanda. In this context, the author constructs a narrative that destabilises European centrality and challenges the notion that former colonies exist solely for and from the European continent. Amidst the marks of the post-war period, the development of a perspective of a relatively happy childhood becomes evident, which challenges hegemonic discourses on suffering and violence. Furthermore, it is observed that the author appropriates the coloniser’s language as a strategy of resistance, establishing a counter-colonial discourse. With regard to the theoretical framework, this study is grounded in the work of Thomas Bonnici (2005) and the reflections of Achille Mbembe (2019) on the relevance of postcolonial thought, whilst also drawing on other pertinent theoretical contributions.
